Amateur jockeys Ross Birkett and Fletcher Yarham are running this year's London Marathon in aid of Racing Welfare. Not only are they running the 26 mile test but they are also hoping to complete the race in under three hours with Birkett hoping to regain a previously held Guinness World Record. During a recent training session the pair told TDN all the details.

00:00The London Marathon is an event known around the world with many people setting themselves the
00:07aim of just getting around the 26 mile test but for Fletcher Yarm and Ross Burkett they have set
00:12themselves the challenge of running the marathon in under three hours in aid of racing welfare
00:17with Burkett hoping to regain a previously held Guinness World Record. During a recent training
00:23session they fill TDN in on the details. Yeah me and Fletcher we signed up for the 2025 London
00:30Marathon that's set on April the 27th in London we're doing on behalf of Racing Welfare it's a
00:36local charity here in Newmarket who are really there to help stable staff out throughout their
00:41careers whether you're starting in racing you've been in racing a good while or you've retired from
00:47racing they're there to help you at every stage whenever you need them so yeah we've got the 26.2
00:52miles around London to get around and we're not we're not going there just to have a jog around
00:57either we're we're both competitive lads obviously both amateur jockeys and yeah so we're going there
01:02to kind of do a good time be Fletcher's first one and he's absolutely fine you're going really well
01:08yeah I'm feeling good yep so we had two times 10k at marathon pace which is about 640 a mile I'm
01:16shooting for under three hours for the marathon I think I'll be able to do that and maybe go a bit
01:20quicker on the day but yeah good workout this morning feeling really good and there'll be no
01:25excuses after the first run yeah and what are you looking forward to on the day most of all oh it's
01:32just a big atmosphere like it's the biggest running race in the world isn't it so I'm looking forward
01:36to see how fast I can go if I'm being honest I've done a lot of training like yourself been a big sort
01:40of like what 16 weeks block which is a you know a lot of miles and obviously it'd be nice having a few
01:47friends and family there on the day for a bit of support and yeah just general atmosphere you've
01:51been race riding all through this time as well how is the running kind of helped your fitness yeah
01:56I sort of I still like yourself like ride as an amateur but a few rides this year no winners yet
02:02but yeah it keeps me fit it helps my weight obviously it's different race riding to running but you
02:09know certainly keeps you fit and active and yeah it's very helpful yeah so like we say we're doing it for
02:15racing welfare so we've got our fundraising pages setups we've got doing quite well on the fundraising
02:20so far we could always do it a bit more so I'll be um not to make life easy for myself I'll be doing
02:26it dressed as a jockey so that's um yeah helmet goggles down have to be down the whole way they've
02:31got a strict set of rules the Guinness World Record gang so um yeah the current record for that is
02:37three hours seven minutes 55 seconds so not too shabby um training was going well up until a couple
02:45of weeks ago had a bit of a niggle with my hip hoping can get that right for the big day whatever
02:51happens I'll be starting I'll be finishing just hope I can run it in a quick enough time and like
02:56we've been saying it's all for a good cause and whatever happens we'll be raising some money
03:01if you are interested in racing at all watch it on the tv or anything please give a small amount of
03:07money because you know the readers help the staff in the sport
